What is modeling and simulation?Modeling and simulation is computer-aided analysis applied to designing high-speed electronic PCBs. Modeling and simulation enhances the traditional engineering process of prototype " debug hardware " re-prototype. This enables engineers to thoroughly and economically explore their options, variables, and design space before building the first prototype. Many “what-ifs” can be investigated and problems dissected on the virtual design. This typically results in success on the first prototype in 90% of new designs. Modeling and simulation replaces the traditional design cycle with this new process:
This new process is much faster and more thorough than the build and prototype process. Typically, the simulate-adjust design activity will take hours to days or weeks. By contrast, the build prototype-debug (and re-iterate until the hardware works) process takes days to weeks or months. Then there is also the expense of scrapping non-working hardware prototypes. Plus, it is far too expensive and difficult to explore what happens when components, PCB dielectric, and other factors vary. Our new book, Semiconductor Modeling: For Simulating Signal, Power and Electromagnetic Integrity, further explains our systems approach to modeling and simulation. There are many tools and resources available to users once they have begun the process of investigating and using modeling and simulation. The challenge is knowing how to combine and leverage them for maximum benefit. Further, some users may not have the volume of design projects to support their own stand-alone tools and staff. In either case we are prepared to help. Leventhal Design & Communications possesses software licenses for Sonnet Software (CST Microwave Suites®) CAE tools. |
